21 Things I've Learnt In 21 Years

I'm turning 22 next week, which is a little scary to me and to celebrate my 22 years on this earth I thought I'd spread my knowledge of what I've learnt in the past 21 years.
My teenage years were a roller coaster to say the least, I've laughed, cried and smiled but through it all I've learnt what works best for me and how to live my life. Before I know it I'll be in my 30's out of education, and truly living life to the fullest but before I can take the next step I needed to realise what has shaped me into the beautiful young lady I am today.

1. I'm not a morning person: If you want my attention before 11:30am you're crazy, my body just doesn't function correctly until then. I'm not the type of person to wake up early. I'm a night owl, I am most creative at night.

2. It's okay not to be okay: It's fine to not be happy-go-lucky everyday, I have so many low days that I've come to terms with it now, it's just the way life is. You take the good the bad and the ugly and you need to remember all the good times and make them out weigh the bad.

3. Not everyone is has your best intentions: I try to see the good in everyone but sometimes people really don't have your best intentions at heart. People want to see you fail so they feel better about themselves.

4. Mistakes don't define you: At this exact moment in time I have no regrets, why let something that happened yesterday affect today? You can't let it bring you down when you no longer have control over it. My mistakes make me stronger and I know I'll learn from them and move on.

5. You've only got one body, love it: I'm sure you've seen in past posts of mine that I've always struggled with my weight and my body but I've come to love my body, I only have one and although diet and exercise can help toward making my body better, I have to come to terms with the fact I am the way I am and it's not going to change over time. My mirror does not define my self worth.

6. I work to live I live to work: I'm not sure if I'm saying this correctly but basically I don't live my life to work, I work because I have to do it to live. A 9 - 5 job really isn't for me, I do it because I need the money to pay my bills and rent, the last few months have shown me I'm far too creative to do a 9 - 5. I can't wait for university to finish so I can cut ties with my 9:30 - 6:30 retail job and travel the world, learn new things and find a job which allows me to show my creative side.

7. Friends come and go: I'd like to say I have many friends but let's me honest I have a handful of friends who I trust with my life and I've met them all at university/college. Good friends are hard to come by. A little like past mistakes you can't allow people who walk out of your life to define your future. If they're not in my life anymore they shouldn't be there. I'm moving on and I know I have a brighter future without the dead weight.

8. Honesty is the best policy: There are two ways of telling the truth, and sometimes even if it will hurt someone being honest is best. It's the way you say it that affects a person, not what you've said.

9. My gut is always right: Going with my gut instinct is always right, there is no point in second guessing things.

10. Relationships are hard: Both friendships and relationships are hard work. At the age of 21 can I really see myself with someone for the rest of my life? Let's say I have 60 years left, that's a long time to commit with someone through all the struggles of life and on that note...

11. Life is hard work: You never know what life will throw at you, it's hard work. I thought my teenage years were bad, although the stress has changed life is still very stressful.

12. You get what you put in: This works on many different levels. Right now this means that I need to invest time, money and effort into things to feel the full effect of it. I can't do things half-heatedly and expect wonders to happen.

13. Life isn't a party: Most people party their bums off at uni, but I'd rather stay at home, save money and have one/two big girls holidays where I party for a week and get it all out of my system for another year.

14. Time flies: I can't believe I'm 22 soon, it feels crazy because I remember my 18th and 21st birthdays like they were yesterday! I can't believe I've been out of mandatory education for 6 years now! I want life to slow down a little, I'll be 30 in no time! A year really isn't that long, not as long as it felt when I was younger anyway.

15. Napping is your friend: I hated having naps as a kid, I'd think I'd be missing out on something, I now cherish them moments when I have a spare hour to nap.

16. My mum is my best friend: I've always said this but we've still always argued like cat and dog but she really is my world. I know I can tell her anything and she'd never judge me, not really judge me. She'd always be honest and she'd never sugar coat it.

17. There is more to the world: I'm been fortunate to be travelling for 10+ years already, and I can't wait to travel world. There is so much out there to see and being stuck in a bubble doesn't allow you to fully understand life.

18. Sorry goes a long way: Although saying sorry doesn't always help, you need to swallow your pride and say it, it's the first step to fixing it. I'm such a proud, stubborn person and my close friends and family know that if I'm saying sorry I really do mean it because it's so hard for me to say.

19. You can't please everyone: It's hard work trying to please the world so don't bother! Put yourself first and the rest will slowly follow. The people that matter don't care and the people that care don't matter. As long as you've got supportive people in your life you don't need to worry about pleasing everyone else.

20. Comfort wins: No longer will I squeeze into a size 5 pair of trainers because the store don't have a 5.5 or a 6 costs more than the size 5. When I was a little younger I'd squeeze into size 5 trainers because they were classed as kids rather than get a size 6 for comfort because they'd cost more. I can't walk in heels, nor do I want to, I don't want to be in pain for days after. I'm happy in a pair of flats so why stress myself over something so petty? I'd rather be comfortable.

21. Life is short: Although life is the longest thing you'll have do, life is still too short. I'm only 21 and I've seen so many people die around me, some younger, some my age and some older. It just shows that life to far too short and you never know when it's your time to go. So live life like you're going to die tomorrow and remember how precious each day is. I hate to use it but YOLO.

Is there anything you've learnt in your lifetime that you'd like to share?

  2. I think a lot of people can relate to these words, hope you have a very happy birthday. One thing I've learnt is that sometimes to grow as a person you need to make mistakes.

  4. Being 22 is amazing! At 22 I finished uni and got a 'real job' (not working all the hours under the sun for rubbish pay!). It also meant I got to travel more which has been awesome. Have a great birthday and when this time next year comes along and you're having your 'OMG I'm 23, that's like properly into your 20's now' breakdown, remember the amazing year you've had!!

  6. I agree with so much of this list! Especially about the whole work thing, I consider myself a pretty creative person too and I HATE spending my weekends in a Supermarket seeing people just lounge and laze about their day instead of going out and enjoying it and exploring places! I want to make the most of my life without being stuck in a job I hate :/

  26. Wow, you're wise for someone twice you're age! This post reminds me of the Baz Lurhman song "Wear Sunscreen". You're likely too young to know it but Youtube it if you get a sec.
